Traditionally, design focused on end products, but enterprise design is fundamentally different because enterprises occupy environments that change, so enterprises we “design” must be capable of change - potentially to fit environments that couldn’t have been anticipated initially. This has three design implications:
1. all design is transitory
2. we need to design enterprises capable of redesigning themselves
3. we need to design enterprises as self-organising systems.
We’ll introduce the viable system model - a design pattern that addresses all these issues and that’s been used on enterprises of all sizes including whole ecosystems and illustrate with a design case.
